Free Riding, Network Effects, and Burden Sharing in Defense Cooperation Networks

چکیده

Abstract How do states distribute the burdens of collective defense? This paper develops a network theory burden sharing. We focus on bilateral defense cooperation agreements (DCAs), which promote in variety defense, military, and security issue areas. Using computational model, we show that DCA partners’ spending depends structure their agreements. In terms, DCAs increase by committing to activities allowing partners reciprocally punish free riding. However, as state's local partnerships grows more densely connected, with many transitive “friend friend” relations, have countervailing effect reducing spending. The deeply integrated are networks, less they spend defense. distinguish two potential mechanisms behind this effect—one based efficiency improvements, other An empirical analysis using multilevel inferential models points than Defense networks reduce spending, so countries produce efficiently.

Free-riding and cooperation in environmental games

This paper examines the negotiation of an international environmental agreement in which di¤erent countries determine the (nonenforceable) promises of investment in clean technologies to be included in the agreement. Furthermore, it analyzes countries’ optimal investments in clean technologies, considering that, in addition to the utility that countries perceive from an improved environmental q...

Cycles of cooperation and free-riding in social systems

Basic evidences on non-profit making and other forms of benevolent-based organizations reveal a rough partition of members between some pure consumers of the public good (free-riders) and benevolent individuals (cooperators). We study the relationship between the community size and the level of cooperation in a simple model where the utility of joining the community is proportional to its size....

Dynamics of Social Systems: Cooperation and Free-Riding

We study the mean field dynamics of a model introduced by Phan et al [Wehia, 2005] of a polymorphic social community. The individuals may choose between three strategies: either not to join the community or, in the case of joining it, to cooperate or to behave as a free-rider. Individuals’ preferences have an idiosyncratic component and a social component. Cooperators bear a fixed cost whereas ...

Coordination of Information Sharing and Cooperative Advertising in a Decentralized Supply Chain with Competing Retailers Considering Free Riding Behavior

This paper studies a decentralized supply chain in which a manufacturer sells a common generic product through two traditional and online retailers under free riding market. We assume that the traditional retailer provides the value added services but the online retailer does not. Factors such as retail prices, local advertising of the retailers, global advertising of the manufacturer and servi...

The Virtual Commons: Why Free-Riding Can Be Tolerated in File Sharing Networks

Peer-to-peer networks have emerged as a popular alternative to traditional client-server architectures for the distribution of information goods. Recent academic studies have observed high levels of free-riding in various peer-to-peer networks, leading some to suggest the imminent collapse of these communities as a viable information sharing mechanism. Our research develops an analytic model to...
